My Neighbor Totoro TV Spot (1992)
In 1992, Troma was the first American film studio to bring Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki's iconic film My Neighbor Totoro to the United States. Troma formed a family-friendly imprint called 50th Street Films to handle distribution for the film, which played around the country. It was later released on home video by Fox in association with Troma. Because of the success of the film, The Walt Disney Company purchased the North American rights to the rest of the Ghibli catalog, and according to Troma president Lloyd Kaufman, also started distributing Totoro, despite Troma owning the rights.
