TROMEO & JULIET (1996)

All the body-piercing, kinky sex, and car crashes that Shakespeare always wanted but never had! Written and partially directed by James Gunn, who would later go on to direct films like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, SUPERMAN, and now heads DC Studios, the Lloyd Kaufman-directed take on the Bard retells the classic Shakespearean tale in true Troma fashion. Premiering in 1996, TROMEO & JULIET rewrote the dueling families of the play as exploitation filmmakers divided over a business empire and an illegitimate child, culminating in a years-long punk rock blood feud with disastrous consequences. Stephen Holden of The New York Times called the film "goofily exhilarating".
